Design Goals

The D&B model railroad is in HO scale and is a dreamed up original design. It doesn't attempt to model a particular era or prototype railroad; though the steam and diesels of the 1940's and 1950's are a favorite. The model railroad is the result of much planning based upon recommendations from model railroad construction and track planning books. The 'Central Midland' layout from the Atlas 'Six HO Railroad You Can Build' book by John Armstrong also influenced the design.

Some of the design goals were:

Maximize main line track length
Hidden holdover tracks
Yard and industry tracks
Point to point operations
Passenger and freight trains
Multiple train operation
Block signaling

Other design considerations included:

Has to be fun
Eventual computer control of some operations
Share garage with car
Work within established budgetary guidelines (wife)
